Minimizing hazards from LNG spills on land and LNG firefighting methods provided at LNG terminals of Gaz de France (in French)

Gaz de France has used a mathematical model to predict the influence of certain parameters in reducing the extent of vapor plumes from accidental LNG spills on land. Various types of impounding areas are considered which are able to minimize the methane cloud in case of an accidental LNG spill, provided that basic safety features are required in the design and construction of LNG facilities. A method was developed to calculate water spray rates for protecting LNG tank walls from the energy radiated by an adjacent fire and a numerical example is given. Also, test results show that high expansion foams are suitable for controlling LNG fires very rapidly. Details of the design and construction of a new 80,000 cu m LNG tank at Fos are presented to illustrate the application of the studies described.
