Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) used an inverted steel funnel over its Mexican well blowout in late Aug. 1979 and hopes the device will help to recover 90Vertical Bar3< of the 10,000 bbl/day of oil flowing from the well head. According to Pemex, the funnel and chemical dispersants will reduce the oil spilling into the Bay of Campeche to approx. 500 bbl/day. The 1 Ixtoc well has released approx. 2.4 million bbl of oil since it blew out in June 1979. The flow was initially 30,000 bbl/day but was cut to 20,000 bbl/day by 7/25/79 and to 10,000 by 8/6/79. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, a private firm has been hired to stand by for cleanup operations at Galveston, Tex., in case the advancing spill invades the area. A private contractor was hired for the latest deployment of spill containment equipment, which took place in late Aug. 1979 at Port O'Connor.
