PeMEX (Petroleos Mexicanos) claims 1 Ixtoc oil flow was cut to 10,000 bbl/day from 20,000 bbl/day in early Aug. 1979 by pumping 100,000 steel, iron, and lead balls in addition to mud, cement, and gelatin into the well. According to a U.S. Navy spokesman, oil washed ashore in mid-Aug. 1979 at intermittent spots along a 7 mi Texas beach front, and ''great quantities'' of oil have been seen 5-10 mi off the Corpus Christi coastline. The Navy has 2000 ft of rubber boom ready to use if it is needed at Aransas Pass and has another 1300 ft of open sea boom standing by. PeMEX has predicted that it may take until 10/3/79 before the blowout is finally killed, at which time the well will have dumped as much as 2.9 million bbl of crude oil into the Bay of Campeche.
