PEMEX (Petroleos Mexicanos) cuts flow from 1 Ixtoc to 1200 bbl/day by pumping water, jell, and brine into the blowout through the 1 Ixtoc well head and into its producing formation via the 1B Ixtoc relief well. Another relief well, 1A Ixtoc, is being extended in probes for an intercept of the well bore. Although the pumping of lead, iron, and steel balls into the well bore led initially to an apparent reduction in flow rate, the technique is no longer effective. In addition, the huge ''sombrero'' had to be abandoned due to high winds and waves.
