Petroleos Mexicanos' (Pemex) 1B Ixtoc relief well was 58 ft away from intercepting the well bore of the 1 Ixtoc blowout in the Bay of Campeche in late Sept. 1979. The intercept target depth was set at 10,848 ft. The 1A Ixtoc relief well was being drilled below 10,462 ft. Operation Sombrero had to be postponed until 10/8/79 because of a structural defect that Pemex technicians found in the handling mechanisms used to position the 300 ton inverted funnel over the well head. According to Pemex, the defect was discovered on 9/24/79 and the equipment was returned to an undisclosed manufacturer in Louisiana for repair or replacement.
