The U.S. Coast Guard, Navy, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration were forced by used weather to stop cleanup activity from the Rio Grande north to Port Aransas, Tex., whose beaches have been soiled by oil reportedly coming from the blowout in the Bay of Campeche According to a Coast Guard spokesman, the bad weather was the result of a cold front that caused wind gusts of 25-45 knots, heavy rainfall, and high tides. In the Bay of Campeche, where the 1 Ixtoc blowout is releasing 10,000 bbl/day of oil into the water, Petroleos Mexicanos had to again delay its Operation Sombrero, which was designed to divert the oil from the well into collection tanks, due to bad weather. A $155 million class action damage suit by Texas shrimp fishermen against Petroleos Mexicanos and two other firms is briefly discussed.
