Petroleos Mexicanos' ''Operation Sombrero'' has been delayed by bad weather. The ''sombrero'' is a 300 ton octagonal cone that has been placed over the well head of the 1 Ixtoc blowout to limit the spill into the Bay of Campeche to approx. 750 bbl/day. The recovery system would involve two four-legged platforms that will be connected to the cone by a 30 in. pipeline. One of the platforms, equipped with a separator, will be used to eliminate the burning gas from the blowout. Oil collected will be diverted through a 347 ft bridge connecting the two platforms to ballast tanks. According to officials of the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration which are tracking the movements of oil sheens in the Gulf of Mexico, the advancing oil should reach no farther north than Galveston.
