Mixed anthracene and carbazol or anthracene crude are continuously rectified to avoid repeated preheat and purging expense. The tube furnace feed is mixed with a solvent instead of using conventional melting, tapping a fraction containing anthracene mixed with solvent for subsequent use as a sprinkler liquor within the column. The anthracene is crystallised out of the solvent downstream of the condenser. Extractive scrubbing of the anthracene crude, followed by separation of anthracene and carbazol is the preferred route, enabling the solvent to be regenerated from the mother liquor resulting from the scrubbing, purification and mixing stages.
