At the present time the coking industry is the main supplier of the anthracene which is used for synthesis of dyes, phosphors, plastics, etc. One of the undesirable and difficulty-removable impurities in the anthracene obtained from coking feedstocks is carbazole. Determination by the Kjel'dahl method does not permit one to find the true value of the carbazole concentration in anthracene due to the presence of other nitrogen-containing compounds in the anthracene. In the present article we describe a method of analyzing the carbazole concentration in crude and enriched anthracene by means of thin layer chromatography and subsequent spectrophotometric determination of the carbazole concentration.
