In our opinion the two most important trends in carbazole utilization are its use to synthesize heat-resistant polymer materials and the production of photosensitive plastic information carriers, where it is required in small quantities, but with a high degree of purity. Investigations have shown that the use of carbazole to modify indene-coumarone (indene-styrene) resins increases the resources of these resins by approximately 50% and gives them valuable properties, permitting extensive use. Carbazole of 90 to 95% concentration is required for modification of indene-coumarone resins, and still higher concentrations for other uses. This article describes two proposed variants of a method for producing 95 to 96% carbazole during the production of anthracene. The carbazole yield is 70 and 66% respectively of the quantity available in the crude anthracene. The production of carbazole in conjunction with anthracene reduces the cost of the carbazole by 21 rubles/t.
