A method of producing technical anthracene from crude anthracene

A process for the recovery of high grade anthracene (95-96%) suitable for conversion anthraquinone, from crude anthracene feedstocks has been developed. The new process is significantly more economical than other on-stream processes due to low consumption of feed stock, engineering simplicity and the use of low cost solvents. Crude feedstocks (70% anthracene, carbazole, phenanthrene, and 30% other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) is extracted (100-150/sup 0/C) with solvent to remove high boiling aromatics and the anthracene (50%)-carbazole (40%) fraction is diluted with additional solvent and fractionated (minimum 24 plate column). The carbazol fraction is collected from the column bottom and the anthracene-solvent from the column top. Anthracene crystallizes on cooling and is recovered by centrifugation and drying. Solvent from each stage is recycled. A variety of solvents were evaluated, the best being solvent naphtha. Extraction and centrifugation temperatures and time, solvent-feedstock ratio (1:1), distillation diluent amounts (1:0.75) and temperature (to 348/sup 0/C) and crystallizaton conditions were optimized using the simplex plan and the latin square method.
