Finding and producing viscous, low gravity crude in Canada

Journal Article · · World Oil; (United States)
OSTI ID:6585659
Husky Oil Canada, Ltd., has solved many difficult operating problems in locating and developing large, shallow reserves of 12-17$ gravity, asphaltic base crude in the Lloydminster area of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Keys to Husky's success have been an aggressive stratigraphic drilling program--which has pinpointed many of the small, unconsolidated sand reservoirs--and a willingness to try new operating ideas. This article outlines the modified conventional exploratory and producing efforts now used commercially at Lloydminster, and discusses some of the new innovations, such as the sonic pump and steam stimulation, now undergoing test.
