Husky's varied programs capture heavy crude

Husky Oil Ltd. uses a variety of producing methods to capture heavy, viscous crude from a number of shallow reservoirs in the Lloydminster area of Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada. These methods include waterflooding, steam drive, polymer flooding, and fireflooding. Steam drive has produced more crude from a given area than waterflooding, but has shown little economic advantage. The firefloods are too new for evaluation, so only waterflooding has enough history for definite conclusions. Husky operates about 415 wells, including oil, gas, and service wells, and has interest in some 70 reservoirs. One of the biggest problems is sand control. All methods of control tried so far have failed to stop sand entry without seriously cutting well productivity. Three new methods are under evaluation. Pipeline transportation of the viscous crude is another problem, but this has been overcome by blending the crude with condensate.
