Report of a conference in Poelitz on paste heat exchange (in German)

Technical Report ·

This report related the experience of the I.G. Farbenindustrie laboratory at Ludwigshafen and the hydrogenation plant at Poelitz in heat exchange involving the coal paste. In that process, a part of the coal paste to be introduced into the hydrogenation ovens was diluted with recycled heavy oil to a certain concentration and then passed through heat exchangers to be preheated by exchange with the hot product (from the ovens) which needed to be cooled. According to the experiences of Ludwigshafen and Poelitz, operations went very well with this process as long as the concentration of solids in the coal paste was at most 40% to 42%. However, both installations had found that a higher concentration of solids led to disturbences in operations, such as worsened heat-transfer coefficients of the heat exchangers, increased pressure drops through the system, and even breakdowns in equipment due to corrosion. With at most 40% solids in the paste, the overall heat-transfer coefficient was about 300 Cal per m/sup 2/ per /sup 0/C per hour. In terms of savings involved by using coal paste heat exchange, Poelitz had estimated them at 450,000 to 500,000 Reichsmarks per chamber per year, under the estimate of 1 Pfg per 1000 calories for gas that would otherwise be used for preheating the entire coal paste. Experiences were too short to give a firm estimate on how much those savings would be reduced by extra repair work necessary on the system because of paste heat exchange.
