Report on coal paste heat exchange in Poelitz (in German)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6496889
A preliminary evaluation is given of coal paste heat exchange after its first month of operation on an industrial scale. In the operation, a portion of the ccoal paste was diluted to some extent and heated to about 40/sup 0/C by heat exchange with gaseous products leaving the hydrogenation ovens. The rest of the paste was heated to about 310/sup 0/C in part of the usual preheater, and then the paste streams were joined and heated further to 365/sup 0/C in the remainder of the preheater. Although the system might not have settled completely into routine operation by the time of the report, it seemed that the Poelitz preheater, which was smaller than the corresponding preheater at Gelsenberg, could provide for a 20% higher throughput than the Gelsenberg preheater. The average concentration of the coal paste at Poelitz was 47.6% at the time, with the thin paste portion having a concentration of 40.5%. The coefficient of heat transfer for the heat exchanger overall was 190 Cal per degree C per m/sup 2/ per hour; the corresponding figure for the preheater was harder to determine a unique value for at that time but it was close to 6. The heat flow in the process seemed to be 438 Cal per kg of pure coal decomposed. A very preliminary estimate of the savings to be obtained by using paste heat exchange was 3 RM per (metric) ton of gasoline. An accompanying table gives quite a bit of data in more detail about the heat exchangers, preheaters, and heat flows for the chamber involved. 1 table
