Title: Report on a visit to Poelitz from October 11 to October 16, 1943 by Obermeister Hillenmaier and Schichtmeister Seling (in German)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6410473

The apparatus and operating conditions of hydrogenation at Poelitz are described. The topics discussed included the gas-circulation systems (3 separate ones for each chamber), the coal chambers, the circulating-gas wash, the paste pumps, the gas-circulation pumps, the centrifuges, the vapor-phase chambers, and the personnel of the plant. Difficulties encountered at Poelitz are considered in comparison to those encountered at Gelsenberg (primarily incrustations in preheaters and heat exchangers, corrosion of values, etc.). Some of the major observations were that Poelitz generally had smoother-operating chambers (more nearly constant pressure differences, temperatures, etc.) than did Gelsenberg and that Poelitz regulated chamber operations according to strict temperature guidelines whereas Gelsenberg regulated throughputs, etc., according to the specific gravity of the products or according to the amount of residues produced in the coal chambers. The report contains a listing of Poelitz's strict time sequence for the steps in starting up or shutting down a chamber. It also contains detailed listings of throughputs, amounts of gases and oils, and temperatures in the coal chambers, prehydrogenation chambers, gasoline chambers, and circulating-gas wash. There was a rather considerable variation in some values among similar chambers at Poelitz, including the percentage of solids in residues and the heat-transfer coefficients of the chambers. 4 tables.
