This patent describes a data processing system which includes apparatus for performing the functionality of a basic operating system instruction processor, a scientific instruction processor and a commercial instruction processor integrated into a single semiconductor logic chip. It comprises: register file means for storing a plurality of operands including floating point operands, binary coded decimal operands and basic operating system operands; binary unit means coupled to the register file means for processing mantissa of the floating point operands, and binary data of the basic operating system operands; decimal unit means coupled to the register file means for processing the binary coded decimal operands; and exponent unit means coupled to the register file means for processing exponents of the floating point operands; and instruction processing means coupled to the register means.
