Chevron's Sacroc unit model of energy savings

In 1972, Chevron began exploring ways to raise the energy savings efforts of the company through individual efforts on the part of its employees. Since that time, records show that cumulative fuel savings in Chevron's mid-continent division of the central region--which includes the Permian Basin--amount to 1,134,460 equivalent fuel oil (EFO) bbl (1 EFO bbl = 6.3 x 10/sup 6/ btu) on projects completed through mid-1977. Established routine energy conservation programs provided an additional 128,415 EFO bbl, for a total cost savings of nearly $4 million. Energy conservation is largely a matter of awareness. Chevron anticipated the need for a concentrated effort to conserve several years ago, and implemented an organization within the company to initiate and oversee conservation efforts.
