Title: Enhanced oil recovery. Chevron's SACROC unit could be model for other EOR projects

While some majors are having to pipe their CO/sub 2/ from far away, Chevron has a source right at home in Texas which supplies a project in the SACROC unit of the Kelly-Snyder field in Scurry County. Discovered in 1948, the field saw rapid primary development until 1951 by which time 1671 wells had been drilled. Waterflooding began in 1954, and by the end of 1971, 771 million bbl of water had been injected into the reservoir. In January 1972, Chevron began its CO/sub 2/ water-alternating-gas injection project. Geologically, the field has always been promising. The SACROC (Scurry Area Canyon Reef Operators Committee) unit, which Chevron operates, is estimated to have 2.1 billion bbl of original-oil-in-place and comprises approximately 98% of the reservoir volume of the Kelly-Snyder field. It sits atop the prolific Canyon Reef formation, an anticlinal limestone lying at an average depth of 6700 ft.
