Energy-conservation efforts net big savings

Conservation efforts at Mobil refineries throughout the world allowed a fuel-saving equivalent to $41 million in 1975. Seven U.S. refineries used 8.7% less energy, while 14 overseas refineries operated by Mobil saved 8.3%. A three-year program by Mobil Chemical Company resulted in $4 million in savings. In compliance with FEA goals for energy-intensive industries, Mobil pledged to lower its consumption 15% between 1972 and 1980. The success of the 1975 effort is credited to an employee participation program and 30 separate projects, the largest of which was a flue-gas expander turbine that will save 270,000 barrels of crude oil a year. Emphasis was placed on good equipment maintenance, monitoring instruments, and new equipment, with a focus on flares, steam, heat exchangers, insulation, heaters and boilers, and distillation operations. Refineries in Japan, South Africa, and England were cited for special recognition.
