The reaction of a cluster with the formula Pd/sub 4/(phen)(OAc)/sub 2/ (I) with the electrophilic reagents NO (II), N-nitrosomethylurea (III), and tetrachloro-o-benzoquinone (TCQ) has been investigated. It has been shown that under the action of electrophilic reagents cluster I disproportionates into Pd(O) and Pd(II) or is oxidized to Pd(II). The reaction of cluster I with reagent II in AcOH at 20/sup 0/C gives the tetranuclear compound Pd/sub 4/(NO)/sub 2/(OAc)/sub 6/. The reaction of cluster I with reagent III in MeCN at 20/sup 0/C gives the complex Pd(phen)(NCO)/sub 2/ (IV. The reaction of an analog of cluster I in which 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (dphen) appears instead of phen with TCQ in DMFA at 20/sup 0/C gives the complex Pd(dphen) (TCQ) DMFA (V). It has been established by x-ray diffraction analysis that complexes IV and V are mononuclear complexes of Pd(II).
