Active catalysts for the oxidative acetoxylation of olefins and alkylaromatic hydrocarbons RH+1/2O/sub 2/+AcOH=R-OAc+H/sub 2/O (R = CH/sub 2/ =CH-, CH/sub 2/ = CHCH/sub 2/-, PHCH/sub 2/-) are obtained by reducing Pd (OAc)/sub 2/ by hydrogen in the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) or 2,2'-dipyridyl (Bipy) with subsequent treatment with O/sub 2/. The complexes appearing as a result with the formula (Pd/sub 9/L (OAc)/sub 3/)m, (L = Phen (I), Bipy (II)), which are responsible for the catalysis, cannot be isolated in a crystalline form. For the purpose of ascertaining the nature of these complexes, the authors studied them by the methods of high-resolution electron microscopy, ultracentrification in solution, and EXAFS and IR spectroscopy.
