The reaction of palladium carbonyl clusters with chelating ligands such as 2,2'-dipyridyl (dipy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) in a method for the preparation of cluster catalysts for the oxidative acetoxylation to toluene and propylene. The composition and properties of the complexes formed in these catalytic systems have not been studied extensively. The reaction of palladium carbonyl acetate Pd/sub 4/ (CO)/sub 4/(OAc)/sub 4/ with Phen gave a tetrahedral cluster, (Pd/sub 4/Phen/sub 4/(CO)/sub 2/)(OAc)/sub 4/. They have discovered that similar complexes are formed in the reduction of Pd(OAc)/sub 2/ by the action of CO in solutions containing Phen and also by the treatment of solutions of Pd(OAc)/sub 2/ and Phen, subjected to prior reduction by hydrogen, with CO. Preliminary experiments showed that the products of the reduction of Pd(OAc)/sub 2/ often contain hydride atoms. In order to elucidate the nature of the complexes formed, they studied these products by PMR spectroscopy.
