The reaction of the cluster (Pd/sub 4/L(OAc)/sub 2/H/sub x/)/sub n/ (where L = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) with 9,10-phenanthrenequinone (phenQ) DMFA, 20/sup 0/C, 2 h) gives the mononuclear complex Pd(2+)LPd(phenQ) (I) (the yield was 60%). Compound I is a dark blue crystalline substance, which is stable in air and insoluble in ordinary solvents. The structure of compound I has been established by x-ray diffraction analysis (3406 reflections, refinement to R = 0.023 and R/sub w/ = 0.031). The crystals of compound I are monoclinic, and the unit-cell parameters are: a = 14.949, b = 7.942, c = 18.07 A, ..beta.. = 108.44/sup 0/, Z = 4, space group P2/sub 1//c. The phenanthrenequinone ligand in compound I is present in the form of the dianion of phenanthrenehydroquinone, and the Pd atom has a square-planar configuration. The mean distances are: Pd-O, 1.983 and 1.987 A; Pd-N, 2.053 and 2.061 A. The intrachelate OPdO and NPdN bond angles equal 83.41 and 82.21/sup 0/, respectively.
