Exchange of molecular oxygen with the oxygen of some metal molybdates used as catalysts for selective oxidation

Journal Article · · J. Catal.; (United States)
A kinetic study was performed on the exchange of oxygen-18 with the oxygen of the normal molybdates of copper, cobalt, manganese, nickel, chromium, iron, and zinc. The reactivities of the oxygen of all molybdates were very similar to each other and to the reactivity of oxygen of molybdenum trioxide, i.e., all specific exchange rates were within one order of magnitude, whereas oxygen exchange rates of the simple metal oxides varied by 5 orders of magnitude. The activation energies of the exchange on all molybdates, except copper molybdate, were 48-55 kcal/mole, compared with 16-40 kcal/mole for the exchange reaction on the simple metal oxides. Implications for catalyst tailoring are briefly indicated.
