Molybdate and tungstate catalysts for methanol oxidation

Ferric, chromium and aluminium molybdates, as well as complete series of solid solutions of iron-chromium and iron-aluminium molybdates were synthesized using a solution technique. The homogeneity of the materials was confirmed by the use of transmission electron microscopy. Ferric tungstate was also synthesized. The crystalline pattern indicates the material is isomorphous with ferric molybdate and is monoclinic at room temperature. Ferric molybdate was found to be the most active catalyst for methanol oxidation. Experiments with oxygen 18 labelled compounds indicate that the reaction is of a redox type and that oxygen for O/sub 2/ and methanol does not readily exchange with the catalyst surface. The results show that water and formaldehyde exchange with the catalyst surface. On passing H/sub 2/ /sup 18/O at 300/sup 0/C over a mixture of molybdenum oxide and ferric molybdate, the /sup 18/O exchanged with bulk lattice oxygen of ferric molybdate. This result was confirmed by laser Raman spectroscopy. 1 figure.
