Selectivity of catalytic oxidation of aliphatic aldehydes

Journal Article · · Pet. Chem. USSR (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
Results of studies of the catalytic oxidation of n-butyraldehyde in a methylacetate solution are reported. Oxidation of butyraldehyde with pure oxygen produced perbutyric and butyric acid in the presence of cobalt, manganese, copper, chromium, molybdenum, and vanadyl stearate. The reaction mechanism remainded the same regardless of the cation, but differences in activity and selectivity were determined by the type of metal cation. In the presence of a mixture of transition metal salts, i.e., cobalt-copper butyrates, control of product composition was possible by controlling the concentration of oxygen in the oxidizing gas.
