A method of consolidating incompetent formations is by injecting a thermo-setting plastic into the formation. It has been found that the injection of the reactive ingredients of the plastic mixture in 2 parts is better than injecting the total mixture at once. The first part of this 2-part injection procedure consists of injecting into the formation a chemical agent that will accelerate the bonding between the sand particles and the plastic. The remainder of the consolidating material which consists of low molecular hydroxy aryl compound is then injected into the formation. A list of chemical agents that can be used for this purpose is included. The preferred agent is 2- aminoethyl-aminopropyl-trimethoxy silane. (11 claims)
