Method of consolidating incompetent sands in oil bearing formation

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7057406
This is a method for consolidating loose sand in an oil producing formation without destroying the permeability of the formation. Sodium silicate is injected into the sand-containing zone and is caused to set therein by a particular combination of chemical treatments. Such treatments consist of injecting an aryl and alkyl aryl hydroxy compounds or mixtures thereof followed by the injection of an inorganic salt to stabilize the set sodium silicate and increase its compressive strength. A set is created which is stable in both oil and in aqueous systems. The treatment is difficult in formations over 4 or 5 ft in thickness, and in such cases it is preferable to use straddle packers for the proper placement of the chemicals. (16 claims)
