A summary of recent data on the production, consumption, price and reserves of coal in the USA follows trends and makes comparisons. Bituminous coal is the principal product of the coal mining industry, although brown coal consumption at power plants is increasing. Total consumption has increased since 1974, with power generation more than offsetting the decline in coal use by the other sectors. Coal prices have varied, rising rapidly in the 1970s. Total coal reserves remaining are estimated at 1,782.9 billion short tons, including thin bed coals. Statistics showing trends in exports and coal mining productivity are included.
