Recent US coal supply, consumption, and price data

A summary of recent data on trends in coal production, consumption, price, and reserves is compiled in seven figures and five tables. Bituminous coal and lignite production show an increase, while anthracite production dropped. A sharp increase in coal used to generate electric power is balanced by a decline in the other sectors. Prices rose sharply after 1973, and declining productivity turned upward in 1980. Recoverable reserve estimates were set at 1,033 to 1,785 billion short tons, which is broken down further into estimates for specific coal types. Worldwide production rose to 4,120 million short tons in 1979 as industrialized countries turn to coal to relieve their oil-import costs. After a drop to 17.4% in 1972, coal contributed 20.5% of total primary energy production in 1980. (DCK)
