Recent US coal supply, consumption, and price data

Journal Article · · Int. Gas Technol. Highlights; (United States)
OSTI ID:5973804
A summary of recent data on the production, consumption, price, and reserves of coal in the US follows trends and makes comparisons. Bituminous coal is the principal product of the coal mining industry, although lignite consumption at power plants continues to rise. Total consumption has increased since 1974, with power generation more than offsetting the decline in coal use by the other sectors. Coal prices have varied, rising rapidly in the 1970s. Total coal reserves remaining are estimated at 1,782.9 billion short tons, but this includes thin beds. Other statistics show trends in exports and coal mining productivity. 7 figures, 5 tables.
