Journal Article · · Energy Top.; (United States)

Recent data on the production and consumption trends, prices, and resources of coal are summarized in several tables and graphs. Lignite is rising in both production and consumption and now exceeds anthracite, while bituminous coal remains the principal product. Prices have risen sharply in the 1970s, while productivity per man-day has declined during the same period. Strip mining productivity is higher than for underground mining. Estimates are made of identified coal reserves and the distribution of the recoverable coal reserve base.
