Effects of air pollutants on plants and information on research needs

Book ·
OSTI ID:6403903
A review of air-pollution problems caused by gaseous and particulate pollutants on cultivated plants is presented. The problem of global air pollution is addressed, but evidence is lacking that global transfer of pollutants is sufficient to injure vegetation. However, movement of pollutants across state and national boundaries has caused serious vegetation problems. The combined effect of two or more gases can cause injury, when no visible injury developed after exposure to the individual gases. A discussion is included of the major atmospheric pollutants and their effects on plants. They are: ozone, peroxyacetyl nitrate, nitrogen dioxide, ethylene, sulfur dioxide, and fluoride. Areas of research needing the most attention are described.
