CG and E eyes Bechtel to solve construction deficiencies at Zimmer nuclear plant

Construction problems at Cincinnati Gas and Electric's Zimmer plant that could preclude licensing have prompted the utility to seek a third-party audit by the Bechtel Power Corp. Quality-assurance deficiencies led to stop-work orders by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission last November. Premature rewelding over unacceptable old welds is among the poor management activities that NRC cites. Although the utility's quality-confirmation program appears to be working, the NRC continues to find its quality assurance inadequate. (DCK)
