Semisubmersible laybarge is popular in North Sea

Journal Article · · Offshore; (United States)
OSTI ID:6318089
Inclement weather and rough seas make the North Sea one of the harshest offshore environments to be challenged in the course of oil and gas field development. In the northern North Sea during the summer weather window, construction vessels are likely to encounter seas over 20 ft. The southern area, although slightly more sheltered, has problems of a different nature with strong tidal currents running up to 5 knots. Despite these adverse conditions well over 4000 miles of pipe have been installed in the North Sea in water depths of up to 1000 ft. The use of semisubmersible laybarges for pipeline construction in the North Sea is discussed.
