Standby vessels play an important role in safeguarding lives. Even though areas like the North Sea are hazardous, the use of standby vessels has made operations safer, and continued improvements are expected. The practice of using standby ships was started in the 1960s when drilling began in the southern North Sea gas fields off the coast of East Anglia. The area's swift tidal flows and inclement weather proved to be the harshest environment yet tackled by the offshore industry.
