The pipelay barge SEMAC I was designed as a mobile offshore construction platform capable of operating in heavy seas and adverse weather conditions, such as those experienced in the Northern North Sea. The 22,300 ton vessel is 433 ft long overall, and 180 feet wide, with a towing draft of 20 feet and a working draft of 45 feet. She is of the twin hull, semi-submersible design. SEMAC I is a state-of-the-art pipeline construction tool. It is capable of handling pipe diameter up to 60'' in very rough seas and at tremendous depths. It is equipped with one Clyde 350 ton revolving crane and three Clyde pedestal cranes and a wide based stinger, the transition section of which is rigidly penned to the barge at four points. The stinger construction provides exceptional strength at critical points for rough sea operation.
