North Sea pipe laybarges: a performance evaluation

Journal Article · · Pipe Line Ind.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6692594
With a current capability of laying 150 to 170 joints/day of 32-in. pipe, conventional laybarges have reached a stage of operating conditions at which a fair and proper cost per foot of pipe laid can be negotiated between the operator and contractor, reports Companie Francaise des Petroles. Reliable operating statistics are not yet available for the new super laybarges, which are expected to lay an average of 200 joints/day in sea depths to 600 ft. Nearly 500 miles of pipeline were laid in the deep waters of the North Sea in 1975; during 1976 to 1980, lines will continue to be installed at a rate of 370 to 500 miles/y.
