Epoxy-coated pipe in UK has contractor approval

Epoxy-powder-coated pipe offers the construction contractor faster laying rates and cost and safety advantages compared with pipe coated with conventional factory-applied enamel. One hundred lengths of 42-in. epoxy-coated pipe were installed as a field test of the new technique for British Gas Corp. In the test, the epoxy-coated pipe sustained transportation and handling with little damage; crews were able to make quick repairs and lay up to 40 joints/hr, compared with only 8 joints/hr for enamel-coated pipe. Because of this success, British Gas will use the epoxy coating on 280 miles of 42-in. pipe for the St. Fergus to Bishop Auckland pipeline, to be laid during 1980-81.
