Abrasion testing of submarine pipe coatings
To evaluate the coating damage caused by pulling pipelines over coral and sandstone seabeds, abrasion field tests were conducted on various coating materials - concrete, coal-tar enamel, extruded polyethylene, coal-tar epoxy paint, alumina-filled epoxy paint, and sand-filled epoxy coating - as well as on two types of joint coverings, the heat-shrinkable plastic sleeve and laminated pipe tape. The thin-film epoxy paints were completely worn away during the tests; all of the alternative coatings showed sufficient abrasion resistance, although the polyethylene coating displayed a tendency to lose adhesion. Cost and performance factors showed the hot-applied, coal-tar enamel coatings to be the most practical alternative. Neither of the jointing systems withstood the abrasion tests.
