Third generation lay barge will speed North Sea line work

North Sea pipelaying has led Viking Jersey Equipment Ltd. to design the third-generation lay barge (3GLB) to lay large-diameter pipe at greater speeds, in deeper waters, and under worse conditions than possible with older units. The 3CLB's field of operation was assumed to be worldwide, its operating conditions 15-ft waves, its survival condition a 100-year storm in the North Sea, the maximum operational water depth 1200 ft, and the maximum pipe diameter 44 in. OD. The pipelaying rate should be higher with double-jointing on board the vessel. The complete vessel-advance operation should be speeded by an automatic winch-control system. On-board pipe storage should be sufficient to continue work during short periods of bad weather. Important features of the design include a stern ramp for launching pipe and a 14-point mooring system initially controlled by a single operator and later to be automated. The barge will be built by the Dutch contractor IHC Gusto B.V. in time for pipelaying in early 1975.
