DOE's Morgantown Energy Technology Center has produced SNG, for the first time from eastern coal, by burning a coal seam underground at a site near Pricetown, W. Va. Western coals had previously been gasified, but the tendency of eastern coal to swell when heated has made the in-situ method difficult. About 1 million cu ft/day of low-Btu SNG is being made at the test site. According to DOE, a large unminable coal resource in the Appalachian region may become available if techniques used on the small-scale test can be applied to other eastern bituminous coal seams. Planned SRC projects at Newman, Ky., by Wheelabrator-Frye Inc. and Air Products and Chemicals Inc. and at Morgantown, W. Va., by Gulf Oil Corp. will now be included in the annual DOE budget requests, with $40 million for the Newman and $45 million for the Morgantown projects in 1980 and even more in 1981. The Newman project is expected to cost $725 million, of which $605 million will be paid by DOE.
