Refined high-sulfur coal eyed for firms

A pilot coal-processing plant of the Wheelabrator-Frye Corporation will produce solvent-refined coal for eastern utilities and attempt to develop a technology for industry that will compete economically with pollution control equipment. Production is planned for mid-1981, with the coal product costing 2.5 to 3 times as much as the original Kentucky coal. The participating utilities, feeling this approach will be cheaper than scrubbers and precipitators, are willing to pay the higher price. The project is seeking both private and government funds to raise the $175 million for construction.
