Southern Co., along with its subcontractors Air Products and Chemicals Inc. and Wheelabrator-Frye Inc., claims that their solvent refined coal process (SRC-I) can produce a liquid product as well as a solid product through addition of a second hydroprocessing step, and that this liquid can be used in place of crude oil for most purposes and can be used directly as a low-sulfur, low-nitrogen boiler fuel; it is excellent as a reformer feedstock for gasoline production due to its high naphthene and aromatic content in the naphtha fraction. According to the Southern Co. report to the US Department of Energy (DOE), a commercial plant operating in 1990 could produce, over a 20 yr plant life, solid fuel at a cost equivalent of $19/bbl crude oil for a market which would amount to about 1.4 million tons/day by the year 2000. If the plant emphasizes liquids production, gasoline could be produced at $31 to 36/bbl. If DOE supports the company's proposal of a $650 to $725 million, 6000 ton/day demonstration plant near Newman, Ky., to be financed 75 to 80% by the US Government, the plant could be in operation sometime in 1983.
