Solvent refining of coal lead to ways to make gasoline costing $.75 to .85/gal and home heating oil from even the dirtiest high-sulfur raw coal, according to Southern Co. The company, with Wheelabratory-Frye and Air Products and Chemical, plans a $650 to 725 million solvent-refined coal demonstration plant of 6000 tons/day capacity near Newman, Ky.; it could operating by late 1983.
