Glutathione peroxidase activity of animal tissues as an index of selenium status

Conference · · Trace Subst. Environ. Health; (United States)
OSTI ID:6298518
This paper reviews briefly the responsiveness of glutathione peroxidase activity in tissues of animals to dietary Se intake. The body components in which glutathione peroxidase has been reported to be most dramatically affected by prolonged Se deficiency include blood plasma, liver, heart, lungs, stomach mucosa, skeletal muscle and eye lens. Components showing moderate effects include erythrocytes, kidney and adrenal glands. The organs least affected are testis and brain. Because of ready sampling access, blood components offer the most useful index. Studies with sheep have demonstrated a close relationship of erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase to Se intakes ranging from deficient to more than adequate levels. Plasma glutathione peroxidase activity appeared less useful than measurements on erythrocytes. Complicating factors other than Se intake which affect tissue glutathione peroxidase activity were reviewed. 21 references, 2 tables.
