The Methanol Energy Policy Act of 1985 (H.R. 3355) responds to the need for long-term energy security, the availability of coal, and the need for government policies that support the demonstration and commercialization of methanol-powered vehicles and the availability of methanol fuel. The government's participation includes the use of automobiles and light duty trucks to demonstrate and evaluate performance, safety, environmental impacts, and costs. The public will be able to buy methanol at locations where public vehicles using it are in operation. A demonstration of long-haul diesel trucks will also make methanol fuel available to the public. The bill provides for periodic reporting on the pilot program, the use of methanol-powered buses in conjunction with federally assisted mass transportation, and establishes an interagency commission to coordinate methanol policy.
