The Nuclear Waste Policy Improvement Act (H.R. 3564) amends the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 to introduce safety factors in the selection of repository and disposal sites. A revision of the guidelines adds as disqualifying factors effects on population centers and geohydrological resources, considers the effect of and routes for transporting hazardous materials to the site, and provides federal assistance to states in order to upgrade routes. Assistance is also available to Indian tribes when transportation routes cross reservation lands.
