Effect of ozone on the phytotoxicity of sulfur dioxide for alfalfa

Journal Article · · Plant Physiol.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6253410
Three cultivars of alfalfa (Mesa-Sirsa, Kansa, and 212-H) were propagated vegetatively and exposed to SO2 at 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.6 ppm with or without 0.07 ppm of ozone for four hours in controlled environment chambers. In the presence of ozone, a higher concentration of SO2 was required to produce an ED50 for foliar injury, indicating an antagonistic effect. In addition, the toxicity curves for SO2 alone or in combination with ozone showed that the response threshold to SO2 was increased by the presence of ozone.
